The problem that results, the conditions that cause the problem, and instructions to avoid it are described below.
The problem:
If the patch is applied incorrectly on Windows Vista the scanner will stop working. The user will consistently see a message indicating NeatScan To Office cannot recognize your scanner or the paper inserted into the Scanner. The message below is typical.
The following conditions result in this problem:
You are working on Windows Vista
You do not run the patch with the “Run as administrator” command
How to avoid this problem:
To run the patch correctly on Windows Vista you must have access to the administrator’s password and run the patch using the “Run as an administrator” command. To run as an administrator right click on the patch executable and choose “Run as administrator”. You will be prompted for the administrator’s password. Enter the administrator’s password, the patch will run successfully.
Please note: even if you login to Vista as an administrator you must still follow this procedure. Administrator accounts run in a reduced privilege mode by default, and require privilege escalation to properly install the patch.
What to do if the problem occurs:
If you have applied the patch incorrectly you can fix the problem by running the NSTO repair facility. There are two methods for running the repair:
Run the repair from the Control Panel:
Open the Vista Control Panel
Click on “Program and Features”
Right click on NeatScan To Office
Choose “Repair” from the drop down menu
Run the repair from CD:
Place the original NeatScan To Office CD in your computer
Re-run the installer
When prompted to “Install” or “Repair” choose “Repair”. Please follow the prompts.
After the repair completes the scanner should function properly
