Automatic rotation to straighten the text followed by auto-cropping obviates the need for a straight scan. It also corrects for crookedly printed documents.
I have given suggestions on improving the rotation/cropping choices in other threads, but fixing that stuff seems preferable to cluttering up the hardware with guide bars (IMO).

I set the settings to receipt and color, and it automatically puts the receipts into black & white with high contrast. I have to edit each image (where I can't retain the auto-rotation to keep the text straight) and save changes before it will go back to in color (with legible detail). This is very time consuming! Why not ...

I agree with the original poster. Cropping is something I do by hand since you won't crop to the inside of the crooked edges automagically.

I would second this idea, but with a slight change to the method of alignment. I do like the way the software auto-rotates to get the text straight (not the edges), but I also like the idea of cropping out the black. Please give us the option of autocropping inside of the triangular black edges, instead of outside.

Let me start off by saying I love the product idea, however performance is another issue. For $500, we should be getting a lot better.

You should be able to scan to specific folder. If you know where items will end up that should be an option.
Way too much of a resource hog. The SQL memory hog limits my ability to do ...

thing that was removed in v4 was the ability to crop an image to the
edge. In v3, if you moved the cursor off the receipt image, the crop
area would stop on the edge. In v4, the cropping area now ...

I agree. I actually crop *every* image I scan to remove any excess whitespace so that the images take up as little space as possible. If I forget to crop it immediately, I either have to live with it the way it is or rescan it.
Also, the rotate options provided are too limiting. Yes, most often, I will want to rotate the image 90 degrees, ...

The cropping feature should be allowed at all times, including Smart Sorting.

When I use the SMART SORTING option, about 1/3rd of my receipts end up in the DOCUMENT section. I can drag the scanned image to the RECEIPTS section.
But the scanned image cannot be adjusted or cropped. So I end up with a small receipt with a lot of black screen.
Any idea why the SMART SORTING option is not working correctly?
