Unfortunately the library can get stuck in the "closing" state if anything at all goes wrong during the save step, or any background tasks terminates unexpectedly. Password protection is already something we've considered, and we'll note the category-related feature requests.   As for your scanning problems - what kind of Mac are you using NeatReceipts with? Do you know if it's 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard)? 

Is the distortion happening with all scans, or just certain types of documents?  If it's consistent through all scans, it sounds like it could be a defective scanner.

Can you try re-installing?  It sounds like there might be a problem with the OCR support libraries.  If it persists after that, let us know.
