I am using the Neat Receipts version 3.0.3 (just bought my first NR last week). From the posts I've read, 3.0 seems to have included some nice features that were mentioned here. Kudos to NR!
Having only used it about a week, I have already noticed that there are still features that would be very useful to add:
- Read the store name from logos. NONE of my receipts are getting the store name populated when scanned. These are major stores - Wal-Mart, Kroger, Rite Aid, Shell. The reason could be that all these stores use logos at the top of their receipts and don't repeat the store name anywhere else on the receipt.
- The ability to select multiple receipts and change/edit the store name, category and payment type. The Tax Category can be changed for multiple receipts, why not the regular Category? And, since NR doesn't read store names from logos, I am having to edit ALL my receipts to add the store name. Read #3 below to find out why I need to change the payment type on multiple receipts*.
- Stop reading the receipt after the payment total and/or the date (whichever comes last). Kroger advertises their gasoline pumps at the bottom of every receipt, and every time I scan a Kroger receipt, NR thinks it is for the Auto/Fuel Category, as well as assigning it to the Tax Category for auto expenses. I have taken to cutting off the bottom of every receipt, but since we tend to buy something from Kroger on a near-daily basis, that's a lot of trimming to do.
*Wal Mart has been advertising the Wal-Mart Mastercard on the bottom of their receipts, so NR classifies the payment type as MasterCard instead of Cash.
- The ability to turn off "Smart Sorting" when all you have is a stack of receipts (or business cards or documents). The Smart Sorting capability of allowing you to scan multiple receipts is GREAT!! But, NR is reading my Shell gasoline receipts as business cards because of the message area Shell is using on their receipts (a bold black rectangle around the message at the top of the receipt). This means that NR doesn't read any receipt information, such as date, total, payment type, etc. I'd really like to tell Smart Sorting that all items being scanned in that session are receipts.
- Read the "aught" symbol as a zero, not an eight. Shell uses the "aught" symbol, so a $20.00 gas purchase is read as $28.88.
- A MEMO field, that will be exported to QIF for Quicken. This is SO important for Quicken users! The memo field is where I track the purpose of the receipt. In NR, the "purpose" field is for folders only.
FYI - why am I scanning in all our grocery receipts? I have an adult daughter who is metally disabled and unable to manage her money. I am required by the Social Security Administration to track what we spend on her for food, clothing, entertainment, etc. Most of these are cash purchases, so I've been having to manually enter all her expenses into Quicken. I saw NR as a better way to manage this, and in some ways it has helped. However, it's less helpful than I need due to not reading the store names, mis-classifying, wrong totals, etc.
Thanks for considering these suggestions; I think others would also find these changes/additions useful.
