    Computer doesn't recognize NR scanner!!!

I used my NR Professional v 2.1.1 with a Dell notebook and had no problems with it, except for some reason I couldn't install the software for my HP AIO. I never really saw any connection between the two and just blamed HP for their lousy software. Now I'm wondering if you can only have one scanner installed on a PC.

Now I have a new Toshiba notebook (Windows XP). Have been using it for some time with the HP AIO software working just fine. Wanting to start using the NR scanner again, I installed the software from the CD and updated it as instructed. When I plug the USB into the computer I don't get the proper 2-note tone, I get a fast 3-note tone, and NR does not see the scanner for calibrating, cleaning or scanning.

I have gone through everything I can think of. Uninstalled NR and all HP software, cleaned the drive, reinstalled the original 2.1.1 version only (making sure that all other sw was off, including virus and firewall.), and of course - lots of restarts. Still nothing, Went on and updated NR, but still no go. Even unplugged my USB mouse, so that the NR scanner and the AC cord are the only things plugged into the notebook. The green light is on and steady on the scanner. It has not been used enough for it to be broken, and has been carefully stored in my office cabinet. Also tried a different USB cable, and checked Bypass Twain Check on Scan in Personalize/Rules.

While I am really a MAC person, I am pretty fluent in PC. Since my searches have not turned up anyone else with this problem, my guess is that there is some setting that I am missing. Can someone please help me with this?
