    Giant File Sizes

I have just started using neatworks.

I have a total of 42 scanned pages... most are 8.5x11, but some are smaller.

My database is 85MB at this point (after being compressed???) and if I export everything to PDF, it still averages 500KB per page!

Is this the normal behavior?  Why are these files so massive?

    Hi,

Most of that 85 MB is "startup cost" - our database doesn't start off with a 0KB size - it has to have the entire structure in place to fill in data.

You'll find that as long as you don't overuse the color scanning capacity, database growth is pretty reasonable.

    Re: Giant File Sizes

So, right now I have 154 documents.

Almost all of these are single pages, a fair number are smaller than 8.5x11.

    All are black and white.

My database is now over a gig in size.  That comes out to about 7MB per document.

This can't be how it is expected to be right?

I think I have a simple solution to the file size problem.  Take a look at the "archives" function in Neatworks 4.  I periodically "archive" older folders on my D drive which can be restored very easily.  Periodically I also "move" documents and receipts into folders called "holding for archive."  This helps me manage file size.  The archived files are relatively small and zipped.

    Re: Giant File Sizes

I just bought NeatDesk for PC and have spent several days getting to know the product and scanning documents, receipts and a few business cards.  Most pages at letter sized and all but one page are B&W.  The database reports 39 receipts, 5 contacts, 40 documents and 425 MB total data.  That's about 5 MB per page.

    I have two questions/requests:

1.)  Is it possible to adjust the scanning resolution to say 200 dpi or 150 dpi?  I'd like to scan more documents into less disk space.

2.) I'd like to store the database repository on a different drive.  My C drive is used as a boot drive but my data is on a separate spindle so that I can Ghost image the boot drive from time to time.

I've read some trick on this forum about how to fool the operating system into finding the database files on a re-mapped folder on my E: drive.  But that solution is cumbersome and inelegant.  I'd like to be able to choose a drive letter for my data from within the installation program or move the database after the program is installed.

Please let me know if there's a way to achieve these objectives or if these may be planned as future enhancements.  I like the product but I dont want to buy a new hard drive and reimage my system disk just to keep using it.  I'd also like to consider the MAC version of the software if I can stroe scanned images on an external hard drive.

Nice product, but a few opportunities to make it better remain.

    Thanks,

    -David
